Yield: 1 loaf

1/3 cup margarine, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons double-acting baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 cup chopped walnuts or other nuts
1 1/4 cups buttermilk
Cooking time: 1 hour 15 minutes

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Line bottom of a 9 X 5 X 3 inch loaf pan with waxed paper.
Cream margarine and sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in egg.
Sift dry ingredients and add the nuts.
Add to first mixture alternately with buttermilk beating after each addition.
Put into loaf pan.
Bake for 1- 1 1/4 hours.
Turn out on rack and peel off waxed paper.
Turn right side up and cool thoroughly before cutting.
